From Code to Close
The market doesn't grade your code. It grades the conversation.
In my presales role, I watched engineers build great products that went nowhere.
Why? Because it’s the sellers and their customers who decide if your product lives or dies. The market doesn’t grade your code. It grades the conversation.
Most engineers I worked with avoided sales meetings. “It’s just talking.” They’d rather be heads down shipping features. But while they were building, the sellers were closing. The product that gets talked about wins over the product that works better in silence.
What sellers actually hear
Sales people can talk. That’s not a flaw — that’s the whole skill.
An engineer hears a 45-minute call and thinks it’s wasted time. A seller hears objections, buying signals, and market feedback in real time. That’s data no dashboard gives you.
When you bridge both sides, your brain changes. You stop thinking “what should I build” and start thinking “who buys this, how do they find it, what makes them stay, what makes them leave.” Customer acquisition, churn, onboarding — these stop being buzzwords and become your actual problems.
The trap
I learned this late and it cost me.
Building in isolation feels productive but it’s a trap. The builder who sells gets tested by the market every day. The builder who doesn’t, only finds out he failed when it’s too late.
